Why Work at Trellis Academy

At Trellis Academy, educators are more than instructors—they are guides, mentors, and partners with families during the most formative years of a child’s life.

Their role is to cultivate an environment where students feel safe to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and grow in understanding. Teachers are called not only to instruct, but to shepherd—to observe, encourage, challenge, and support each child with wisdom and care. As partners with families, educators help shape both academic growth and character development, modeling integrity, humility, and a commitment to truth.

If you believe young children deserve to be known, supported, and encouraged to grow with confidence, Trellis may be a place where you can do your best work.

Rae Klein is a second-generation teacher with a passion for creating engaging, student-centered learning experiences.

She studied at Bennington College before transferring to Texas A&M University at Galveston, where she focused on marine biology and fisheries.

Ms. Rae has a background in both Montessori and Reggio-inspired education. She believes strongly in giving students ownership of their studies and classroom environment, encouraging self-paced learning and allowing children to take an active role in their education.

She is also a firm believer that nature is one of the best teachers, and you’ll often find her taking learning beyond the classroom and teaching outside.

Ms. Rae loves science, nature, SCUBA diving, and cooking. When she’s not on the water, you’ll most likely find her digging in the dirt with her daughter.

Ms. Kayla brings more than 20 years of experience in early childhood education, with a background in Montessori and play-based learning. She believes children learn best when their individual learning styles and social-emotional needs are understood and supported.

She earned her Psychology degree from UT and went on to get a masters degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at Texas State. During that same time frame she earned her certification as a Montessori Educator. She brings experience in curriculum development, student assessment, parent education, and behavioral support. She creates a thoughtful and engaging classroom where young learners can build confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for continued growth.

Ms. Kayla has two children. Her son Daylen is 18 and graduated high school this past May. Her daughter Irelan is 16 and going to be a junior this year. In her free time she loves being outdoors, reading, swimming, and her favorite place for relaxation is her front porch swing.

Ms. Leslie Kent

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Trellis Academy logo: a delicate leaf illustration between two horizontal lines.
Ms. Leslie Kent serves as Administrative Assistant at Trellis Academy, providing support to our excellent teachers and helping advance the overall mission of our school.

She and her husband, Steve, lived in the DFW area for 35 years, where they raised their three children. Her career in education has been a “patchwork quilt” of varied and meaningful experiences. While in DFW, she taught special education students at a community college, homeschooled her children, founded and taught in a homeschool co-op, and founded a hybrid-model school where she served as director for 11 years.

She later resigned to move to the Texas Hill Country and fulfill Steve’s dream of living in “God’s country.” Since moving to the Austin area, she has taught high school history at Regents School of Austin, served as Assistant Director at a new school, and taught Social Studies to 3rd–8th grade students at Blaze School.

Now, Ms. Leslie is excited to bring her years of experience to Trellis Academy and support its teachers, students, and educational mission.
